The Book of Jeremiah

Chapter 14

Literal Drought & Intercession

In this chapter, Judah continues to be miserable because of their own sins against the Father. They ignore the prophet, Jeremiah, and the words that he speaks that come directly from Him, and continue to worship idols, commit adultery and live a life of immorality.

And to top that off, their prophets, their FALSE prophets, continue to tell them that everything is going to be ok, while the Word of our Father tells them they are bound for destruction and captivity.

We, today, live in a Christian country that probably has more churches than any other, and these churches are FULL of false prophets, preachers speaking their own words, from their own imaginations, drumming the wrongful beliefs of their church organizations into the minds of the congregation.

And the people sit there every Sunday morning, like dumb masses, nodding their heads to the words of so-called wisdom from the “preachers” up there in their expensive suits, like bobble-headed figures on the dashboard of a car.

     Futility in its purest form.

So, how do you break this cycle? How do you get a person away from that nonsense and get their heads into the Word of God to where they can learn some truth? It will never happen unless each individual makes up his or her mind that living in this world, buying all the toys and trinkets, accumulating wealth and power, is just human folly.

The wealthiest man in the world, during his time, was king Solomon and he said that everything that he owned was pure vanity. It was all worth nothing. Because it was worldly.

This life is a proving ground, to determine whom we will love and follow…our Lord and Savior or the Prince of the Air, Satan.

But you’ll never hear that from these “little antichrists” because enriching themselves is paramount over all else.

Is it no wonder that Satan will deceive the entire world through these false preachers?

Revelation 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. KJV

     Alright, verse 1…

Jeremiah 14:1 The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah concerning the dearth.

     What is this dearth?

Dearth_ OT:1226 batstsoreth (bats-tso'-reth); feminine intensive from OT:1219; restraint (of rain), i.e. drought:

Remember that Father is using drought and famine to punish Judah for turning their back on Him and living like THEY want to and not according to His commandments. They’ve been thumbing their noses at Him for quite some time now, but Father is tightening the screws a little more with this drought.

And what happens when there is no rain? Crops don’t grow, there’s no food to eat, and famine sets in.

IF Judah were to repent THAT AFTERNOON, it would do them no good because it’s going to take time for new crops to grow to the point that they can be eaten. Father is not likely to have burgers and fries come down from the heavens by that evening.

Jeremiah 14:2 Judah mourneth, and the gates thereof languish; they are black unto the ground; and the cry of Jerusalem is gone up.

And the gates thereof languish. The people have left their homes and gone to the gates of the city to mourn among themselves, at the situation that they find themselves in at the moment.

They are black unto the ground. This is kind of a figure of speech in that they look at the ground and, it’s no doubt, so dry that it’s cracked and “black” refers to the “sorrow” they feel for the situation that they’re in. They know that things are not going to improve any time soon.

Jeremiah 14:3 And their nobles have sent their little ones to the waters: they came to the pits, and found no water; they returned with their vessels empty; they were ashamed and confounded, and covered their heads.

And their nobles have sent their little ones to the waters. “Little ones” doesn’t refer to children; the NOBELS have sent their SERVENTS to get the water.

This word “pits” means well or cistern..

Pits_ OT:1356 geb (gabe); from OT:1461; a log (as cut out); also well or cistern (as dug):

A well or cistern. In this case, probably a cistern to collect rainwater.

And covered their heads. A sign of embarrassment and sorrow.

Jeremiah 14:4 Because the ground is chapt, for there was no rain in the earth, the plowmen were ashamed, they covered their heads.

Chapt is an old Dutch word that means “to cut off”, indicating that the ground is very dry and parched for the lack of rain.

Jeremiah 14:5 Yea, the hind also calved in the field, and forsook it, because there was no grass.

The stock in the fields would have their calves and then abandon them because of the lack of water and grass on which to graze. She couldn’t produce the milk necessary to feed her newborn calf.

Jeremiah 14:6 And the wild asses did stand in the high places, they snuffed up the wind like dragons; their eyes did fail, because there was no grass.

Wild asses actually refer to an animal called an onager. They walked the steep hills as sheep and ram normally do, they sniffed the wind but found no indication of grass to graze on.

Jeremiah 14:7 O Lord, though our iniquities testify against us, do thou it for thy name's sake: for our backslidings are many; we have sinned against thee.

We know that we’ve done wrong, Lord, and the people begin to wail and cry.

“Oh, Lord, save us for YOUR names’ sake.”

Save us so that the heathen nations don’t think that You’re some kind of uncompassionate God.

Jeremiah 14:8 O the hope of Israel, the saviour thereof in time of trouble, why shouldest thou be as a stranger in the land, and as a wayfaring man that turneth aside to tarry for a night?

They implore our Father to NOT treat them as a traveler that spends only one night in a lodge and then goes on his way, caring nothing for the land nor the people in it.

That really takes some gall, doesn’t it? They ignore Him, break His commandments continually, worship idols made of stone and wood instead of Him, and then get bent out of shape when He punishes them for doing all those things.

What about you? Do you ignore Him day after day and then pray fervently to Him every time a crisis arises in your life? And you have the gall to wonder WHY He doesn’t respond to your prayers?

You go to some Beth-Aven, some church of nothing, every Sunday morning, where His Word is sparingly mentioned, you listen intently to some false prophet, some false preacher, that is more concerned with how many show up each Sunday and how much money is put into the basket because he has bills to pay, and then get PO’d when He doesn’t answer your prayers.

WE’RE no different from the Israelites. That includes all of us.

Yep. We’re all His children, but of the 7.2 Billion of us on this earth today, what makes YOU SPECIAL in His eyes? What have you done lately that would make Him say…

“That’s My child down there. Look at what he/she just did FOR ME.”

Usually, we’re asking Him what He’s done for US lately.

     Boggles the mind, doesn’t it?

Jeremiah 14:9 Why shouldest thou be as a man astonied, as a mighty man that cannot save? yet thou, O Lord, art in the midst of us, and we are called by thy name; leave us not.

This word “astonied” means to be dumbfounded…

Astonied_OT:1724 daham (daw-ham'); a primitive root (compare OT:1740); to be dumb, i.e. (figuratively) dumbfounded:

Why shouldest thou be as a man astonied. Why, Lord, should you act as though You are dumbfounded with us, as though You know not what to do with us?

We are YOUR people, Lord. We are called by YOUR name. Don’t leave us like this.

The only way for Israel to get back in our Father’s good graces again is to REPENT. A national repentance. Change the way they live. This won’t turn the punishment away immediately, but it’s a start, to show Him that you just might have had a change of heart.

The drought and famine will continue even if they did repent because you cannot con God. He knows their history, He knows how they’ve acted before, and it’s always the same.

Cry to the Lord when He begins to punish you for your wicked ways, beg for forgiveness, accept the return of His love, and then go out and begin whoring around with false idols again. Happens every time. Over and over again.

Jeremiah 14:10 Thus saith the Lord unto this people, Thus have they loved to wander,

People today go from one church to another, looking for something that’s going to tickle their ears, something new in the way of religion, something different that will spark their interest.

they have not refrained their feet,

On and on they go. Here, in Jeremiah, it means that they continue to go after idols and not our Father. Which is what is happening today. They go from church to church looking for some MAN to spark their interest, when, if the Word of God were taught in church that they normally attend, they wouldn’t have to go around looking for something interesting.

And if the true Word of God doesn’t spark your interest, then Satan may have just won out over you.

therefore the Lord doth not accept them; he will now remember their iniquity, and visit their sins.

Why will He remember their sins? Because they haven’t repented of them yet. Remember what Father said back in Isaiah?

Isaiah 43:25 I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins. KJV

You could have a million sins against your soul and on repentance, they are removed and no longer remembered by our Father.

Sounds pretty sweet, doesn’t it? So easy to repent of it all. Do you remember who made it possible for you to be able to do that?

Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was ridiculed, bitch-slapped, spit on, punched, whipped with a leather whip, a ring of thorns shoved onto the top of His head, blood running freely from His battered body, and after walking up the side of that mountain, He was nailed to a cross, the bottom shoved into a hole in the ground, given vinegar to drink and stabbed in the side with a spear before He finally expired and died.

But all you have to do is sit comfortably somewhere, sip on your Starbucks coffee, and mentally repent of your sins. And mountains have to be moved before you’ll do even that!

Yeah, Father created everything that we see, use, consume and eat. Our Lord died a horrendous death on the cross. WHAT ELSE DO YOU WANT THEM TO DO before you start living a life that is pleasing to them both?

Jeremiah 14:11 Then said the Lord unto me, Pray not for this people for their good.

Don’t you even pray for them, Jeremiah, they’re not worth it.

Jeremiah 14:12 When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and an oblation, I will not accept them:

Why not? Because they’re not sincere, they’re giving Him lip-service. He knows the condition of their hearts and mind, and if He relents and forgives them, even though they have not ASKED for forgiveness, they’ll go right back to doing what they were doing before.

but I will consume them by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence.

Being conquered and put into captivity takes care of the sword, famine is caused by the lack of rain, but what is this pestilence? It’s the plague. It’s having leprosy or the rot or murrain, a disease that affects cattle, goats, swine, camels, and so on.

It was the fifth plague that Father put on the Egyptians when Moses was trying to convince Pharaoh to release the Children.

     NOTHING is going unpunished.

Jeremiah 14:13 Then said I, Ah, Lord God! behold, the prophets say unto them, Ye shall not see the sword, neither shall ye have famine; but I will give you assured peace in this place.

“You don’t have to study or read the Bible, just listen to me and we’ll be raptured out of here together.”

That’s what the false prophets will say today.

Behold, the prophets say unto them….Jeremiah is trying to make an excuse for their behavior by telling our Father that the false prophets have convinced the people that everything is going to be ok.

Jeremiah 14:14 Then the Lord said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart.

Boy, that gets it said right real good… the deceit of their heart. These prophets are not good people, they’re liars, just like the false preachers of today.

“God told me what suit to wear today and what tie should go with it.”

Do you think Father gives a rat’s butt what suit they wear? And if they’re so stupid that they can’t even choose a suit and tie to wear, as they stand behind the podium and speak their own thoughts, their own truths, their own prophesies, Father is not going to help them out.

Think about it…Father has an entire planet with 7.2 billion souls on it to worry about and this idiot says that God took the time to tell him what suit and tie to wear?

I’m going to keep it clean and just say….unbelievable. And the payoff is that people believe that Father did exactly that and they’re all joyful and happy about it.

“My preacher! God talked to him today.”

     Good grief.

Jeremiah 14:15 Therefore thus saith the Lord concerning the prophets that prophesy in my name, and I sent them not, yet they say, Sword and famine shall not be in this land; By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed.

Tell the people to hang tight and let’s see what happens. Father will give them the sword and famine and pestilence such as they’ve never seen before. These false prophets will probably be the first to be consumed.

What were we told in 1st Peter?

1st Peter 4:17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? KJV

The false prophets, the false preachers will be first in line for Judgment so, while you wait your turn, take a seat, because there’s a bunch of them.

Jeremiah 14:16 And the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword; and they shall have none to bury them, them, their wives, nor their sons, nor their daughters: for I will pour their wickedness upon them.

The prophets are going to be consumed because of their lies, this is what is going to happen to the people. Not because they listened to these little antichrists but because of their own sins.

The famine and the sword are going to kill all of them, to the point that there will be none left alive to bury anybody.

Jeremiah 14:17 Therefore thou shalt say this word unto them; Let mine eyes run down with tears night and day, and let them not cease: for the virgin daughter of my people is broken with a great breach, with a very grievous blow.

The eyes that will run down with tears will not belong to our Father but Jeremiah. Cry forever, Jeremiah, because of what it going to happen to these people.

Is Father being unfair? Not in the least. We are judged for our own sins, our own transgressions.

Jeremiah 14:18 If I go forth into the field, then behold the slain with the sword! and if I enter into the city, then behold them that are sick with famine! yea, both the prophet and the priest go about into a land that they know not.

You can look out in the field and see the dead by the sword; you can look in the city and see the dead from the famine.

Both the prophet and the priest go about into a land that they know not. They’re going into captivity by the Babylonians.

Jeremiah 14:19 Hast thou utterly rejected Judah? hath thy soul lothed Zion? why hast thou smitten us, and there is no healing for us? we looked for peace, and there is no good; and for the time of healing, and behold trouble!

The people are saying that they looked for peace and good and healing and all they got was trouble. They can’t blame Father for that because their sins are of their own doing.

Jeremiah 14:20 We acknowledge, O Lord, our wickedness, and the iniquity of our fathers: for we have sinned against thee.

Finally, we hear them taking responsibility for their actions and it wasn’t just this group that was covered with sin, it goes back to the times of their fathers as well, so this has been going on for a long, long time.

Jeremiah 14:21 Do not abhor us, for thy name's sake, do not disgrace the throne of thy glory: remember, break not thy covenant with us.

Don’t punish us so harshly that you make yourself look bad, is what they’re saying. Oh, now they’re concerned with Fathers’ name among the heathen, are they?

Jeremiah 14:22 Are there any among the vanities of the Gentiles that can cause rain? or can the heavens give showers? art not thou he, O Lord our God? therefore we will wait upon thee: for thou hast made all these things. KJV

Are there any Gentiles out there among the nations that can make it rain for us? Can they plead to the heavens for us? No, of course not.

But they WOULD bypass the Father by going to the Gentiles, if they could produce rain somehow.

Therefore we will wait upon thee: for thou hast made all these things. The tone of resignation, because they realize that Father is in control and there is none else. He’s the only One that can stop all of this carnage.

Will Father really kill all of Judah? No, He won’t, but He will put them into bondage and make them slaves of other peoples.

What kind of a slave are you today? Are you so buried in credit card debt that you can’t see daylight? Are you making payments that you can’t afford on some house that won’t be paid off for 50 years?

It’s called usury. Interest. One of Satan’s favorite ploys. Get you so far in debt and so depressed that you’ll curse God first thing in the morning when you get up, because it’s another day of trying to figure out how to get out of the mess that you’ve gotten yourself into.

It takes a while for the crops to grow for the Israelites after the famine is over, even if they repented of their sins today, and the same thing applies to us today. You can turn your whole mess over to the Father but it’s STILL going to take a lot of time to get it all cleaned up.

But the first step is to ask for repentance of your sins and then turn it all over to Him. Maybe He’ll open a door or two to speed up the process of you getting back on your feet again.

Either way, you’re going to be in “captivity”, in Satan's world, for a good long while.
