Bible Study-REV-Chapter 3

The Book of Revelation

Chapter 3

Revelation 3:1 And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead.

Revelation 3:2 Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God.

Revelation 3:3 Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.

Revelation 3:4 Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy.

Revelation 3:5 He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.

Revelation 3:6 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. KJV

     Quick Points:

     1. This church of Sardis is about 50 miles north of Smyrna.

     2. The art of dying wool is said to have been invented here.

     3. A city of great importance due to its fertile soil for crop growing and commercial business.

  • To the church of Sardis:

Christ said that this city was dead simply because He wasn’t worshipped there. There was no Spirit there. As with the Egyptians, they had a church to every god imaginable on every street corner.

However, at this church of Sardis, Thou hast a few names, the names of a few members that are in the Book of Life. But with a church such as this, how long will it be before they too sink into the spiritual mire with the others. Getting caught up in their traditions and losing what they have.

Watch! For it may happen unbeknownst to them and come as a thief in the night.

These people go through their lives giving no heed nor thought to Him. And they seem content to do so. They certainly do not seem to be inclined to change their ways and that’s why He tells them that He will come as a thief in the night. They won’t be expecting Him.

In the spiritual sense their clothes are black with sin and this color will not enter into the Kingdom of Heaven, His Kingdom, but if they will repent and get back on the right track He will make sure that each of their names are written in that Book of Life and He will tell all of heaven about them and their clothing shall again become white as snow, free of damnation.

In ancient times all citizens had their name written in a registry for the city within which they lived and when they died their name was erased from the registry. In this same sense, to blot out or erase ones name from the Book of Life would be equal to their soul experiencing a spiritual death. They are no longer a part of our Lord’s spiritual city.

But when a church today is operating in spiritual darkness, as is Smyrna, somebody has to come in and shake things up a little. That’s pretty hard to do. If you’re a member they might call you an instigator and run you off; if you’re a newcomer, and they find out that you might want to stir things up a bit, by bringing in the Truth, they might not let you in at all.

Some church members are so set in their spiritual ways and so content with their position within the church, they might wail on you for trying to upset the apple cart.

  • To the church of Philadelphia:

     Quick Points:

     1. The City of Brotherly love in Asia Minor (Turkey).

     2. It lies about 25 miles southeast of Sardis.

     3. Today it is called Alla-sher meaning the city of God.

     Revelation 3:7 And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;

Revelation 3:8 I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.

Revelation 3:9 Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee.

Revelation 3:10 Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.

Revelation 3:11 Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.

Revelation 3:12 Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.

Revelation 3:13 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. KJV

The key of David is what I was talking about earlier. When your ears and eyes are opened to the truth of the Word you will have that key. The key to the Scriptures is understanding. Once that door to understanding is opened, no one can close it. You may be robbed of the truth by someone keeping you from knowing it but once the knowledge is there no one can remove it.

Our Father has set this church before that open door and once there no man can shut it and they have gone through that door, they teach the true Word and they don’t deny the opportunity of salvation, through Christ, to those that want to accept it.

The only place throughout Scripture where the words synagogue of Satan are found, are here in Revelation and referenced to these two churches. Who belongs to this synagogue? The Kenites, of course. The sons of Cain. They passed themselves off as the children of Judah. They were the loudest voices in the crowd before Pontius Pilate.

And if you know who these people are and you overcome the temptations of their father, Satan, you will be made a pillar in the Temple of My God. The pillars are what supports the dome of the temple and Jesus Christ is the cornerstone.

This hour of temptation is a day actually and it's the day that our Lord returns to stand upon this earth once again, the Lord's Day, and if you are one of His Children and are in His good graces, you have nothing to worry about. We covered this back in chapter1:10. You can stay in His good grace by studying His Word and repenting of your sins often enough  so that they don't pile up on you. It only takes a minute to get rid of them.

The “New Jerusalem” is again mentioned in chapter 21:2 of this book and it’s the Holy City of the Eternity. What a special time that’s going to be. We’ll get to that chapter soon enough but right now we’ve got some work to do.

If you love the Father and you take the time and effort to understand His Word He’s going to write a name on you, a new name. Don’t take a chance on not being there during the Eternity. Do the “grunt” work now, if I can use that term here.

Yeah, some of the Scriptures are difficult to understand but through your own perseverance, in time, you will receive that key of David and if you live right and keep your nose clean after that, you’ll spend the rest of eternity with a big smile on your face.

     Again, eyes and ears.

  • To the church of the Laodiceans:

     Quick Points:

     1. Laodicea was known for its production of black wool.

     2. It does not appear that St. Paul ever visited or taught at Laodicea. Mark, however, was one of the early messengers.

     Revelation 3:14 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;

Revelation 3:15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.

Revelation 3:16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

Revelation 3:17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:

Revelation 3:18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.

Revelation 3:19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

Revelation 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

Revelation 3:21 To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.

Revelation 3:22 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. KJV

As many as I love. Christ loved a great many people in this church but they were bogged down in mediocrity and repetition of boring acts and sermons. The “pastor” is charged with the responsibility of teaching the Word of God to the flock, the congregation, and the people. And if there is boredom and mediocrity in a church it is the preachers fault, not the people.

Christ doesn’t like that kind of attitude. Just swinging in the breeze, oh my, what a wonderful world. Bull crap! Get off your lazy mediocre butt and start doing something, even if it’s wrong. Christ said that He would rather you be FOR or AGAINST Him, not somewhere in the middle where it makes Him sick to His stomach. Those kind of people put a bad taste in His mouth.

Have you ever shaken hands with a man and his return grip is like a dead fish? Limp like a wet dishrag. That’s what our Lord is talking about. They don’t even have the gumption to stand up for anything and if you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything. Satan depends on that.

What probably gave them this attitude is self-satisfaction. They were well off, they bought and had everything that they thought they needed, they didn’t need to ask anybody for anything.

The bad part is their soul is probably going to hell.

They do need something, they need the Word of God taught to them with conviction and boldness! Get up off your lazy butts and start studying the Bible on your own.

With grace and love and kindness He will stand at the door and knock and see if you will invite Him in to eat a spiritual meal with Him. And if you do, and you confess your sins, change the way you live and overcome the temptations of Satan/Antichrist He will take you to Paradise.

How ‘bout them eyes and ears?

The most important lesson was to identify who the Kenites are. I’ll be getting into more detail on them later in Revelation.

Protect your own soul. Study the Scriptures on your own. As I have said before: even if you don’t understand everything that you read, you tried! And when you try, and still fall short, our Father still looks at that as perfect. Don’t ever give up. You never know when the Holy Spirit will speak to you.

Don't get caught up in gossiping, in church or out and do not get so secure in your POSITION in that church that you fall into the trap of mediocrity. "Well, I'm good friends wtith the preacher, don't you know." Don't hook your wagon to his horse until you are absolutely sure that he's headed in the right direction. If he's not, you better run for your spiritual life.
